As you know, around here we’re all about the sound – so it seemed sensible to let you enjoy our new series Bass Tone via your ears rather than your eyes!

Discover the power, depth, and unmistakable thump of the upright bass in this opening episode of Bass Tone with Nick Long. From orchestral arco passages to jazz pizzicato grooves and rockabilly slap, this episode explores how the double bass shaped the sound of popular music long before the electric bass arrived. If you’re an intermediate bassist looking to expand your tonal palette, a guitarist curious about switching instruments, or a music lover eager to develop deeper listening skills, this episode will help you hear bass in a whole new way. Learn how tone—not just technique—defines iconic tracks, how to distinguish upright from electric bass by ear, and why this towering instrument still plays a role in everything from classical music to modern drum and bass.

Series author Nick Long has kindly lent his voice to the project and so we’re very pleased to announce the first Easy Ear Training podcast: Bass Tone, Part 1: Introduction and the Upright Bass.

Summary

In this series introduction, Nick Long makes the case for bass as the essential connective tissue of popular music—bridging rhythm and melody, groove and harmony. He challenges common misconceptions about bass players and shifts the focus away from flashy technique toward something more powerful: tone.

The episode begins with a deep dive into the upright (double) bass—the original “daddy of all basses.” You’ll hear demonstrations of:

Arco (bowed) playing and its rich, sustained orchestral tone

Pizzicato (plucked) technique common in jazz and popular styles

Slap upright bass used in rockabilly and bluegrass for percussive drive

Nick explains how the upright bass is tuned, how it differs from other orchestral strings, and how to recognise its smooth glissando slides compared to the semitone-stepped slides of electric bass. He also explores the instrument’s physicality, cost, scale length, and the challenges that led to its eventual evolution in the 1950s.

Along the way, you’ll discover why listening on proper speakers or headphones matters for bass frequencies, and you’ll be encouraged to develop active listening skills—turning your ears toward the bass line in your favourite tracks.

The episode closes by setting the stage for the revolutionary arrival of Leo Fender and the electric bass—coming up in the next instalment of Bass Tone.
