Tip #4: Keep a PJ

Here at Musical U we recommend keeping a Progress Journal for a variety of reasons. But did you know it can boost your confidence too?

In fact, there’s no better way to become a more confident performer over time than to keep a progress journal. There are some techniques you can use to make sure that your PJ contributes to your success and confidence as a performer

It may not seem related to your boldness as a performer, but keeping a progress journal is one of the most surprising and effective ways of increasing your confidence. It gives you the opportunity to look back through all the small wins that you might not otherwise recall so vividly. It shows you how much you’ve improved over time. Without a progress journal, we often forget where we started and how far we’ve come.

Keep-a-progress-journal

In your progress journal, you can list any notes and progress indicators you’d like. If you’re not sure, you could start with the following:

  • What you accomplished recently in your training.
  • What your biggest opportunity for improvement is.
  • What you’ll focus on in your next practice session.

With each of these the important thing is to continue updating regularly. For example, try to write down what you accomplished after every training session. Or check in with your biggest opportunity once a week and see how you’re progressing. Keep track of whether you do focus on what you’d planned to in each practice session.

For now just focus on the regular updates. Before you know it, you’ll be able to look back and see the clear improvement, and that will give you a big boost to your confidence because you’ll know you’re better than you used to be.
