In four weeks you’ll exercise your ears and musical brain using the mighty skill of active listening to experience music from different style periods of Western classical music, jazz, and various world music traditions. continuing the journey begun Part 1.

You will learn how instrumentation, texture, form, rhythm, pitch, harmony, and audio effects combine to define and distinguish musical genres.

Week 7: Western Classical Music: 1600s and 1700s

Module 1
We now turn to applying our active listening skills to certain genres of music. We’ll begin with the Western Classical Tradition.

Learn how the various dimensions of pitch, rhythm, articulation, dynamics, musical form and more combine to give us a deeper and richer picture of the European tradition of the Renaissance and Baroque eras.

Week 8: Western Classical Music, 1800s – 2000s

Module 1
This guide will look into the music of three more “style periods” of Western Classical Music – Romantic, 20th Century, and Contemporary – and how you can deploy your active listening skills to deepen your understanding and increase your appreciation of these milestone compositions.

Learn how the various dimensions of pitch, rhythm, articulation, dynamics, musical form and more combine to give us a deeper and richer picture as the Western tradition expands and embraces more influences – from Iowa to India – and sonic experiments.

Week 9: Jazz Classics

Module 1
This guide will look into historically important tracks in the jazz tradition.

Learn how the various dimensions of pitch, rhythm, dynamics, musical form, improvisation and more combine to enhance our understanding and enjoyment of some of the most joyful jazz tracks ever recorded.

Week 10: A World of Music

Module 1
This guide will look into the intersection of musical traditions originating in Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America.
